Services/Programs In accordance with The Youth Source’s mission statement: “Investing in our youth and families by giving them V.O.I.C.E.S. to make positive decisions through: Volunteerism, Outreach, Information, Character development, Education, and Support,” the organization’s services and programs correlate with the mission as follows:
- The After School Program addresses the needs of families whose children need assistance with homework or tutoring in specific areas. The program will allow elementary school children to get assistance with their studies to prepare them to end the school year on target academically and socially. Volunteer tutors as well as scheduled events, workshops and activities will combine to develop a well-rounded child, ready to compete in middle school and high school. This is a free resource for parents who cannot afford other after school assistance in the area. Mondays, 4-6 pm, with no fees as long as the children are picked up on time. There is a charge of $10 for children picked up more than 5 minutes late (6:05 pm)
- Summer Day Camp was a new program during the summer of 2013. Participants were exposed to a variety of educational and physical activities and experiences to keep them entertained: free tennis lessons, movies, trips to the museum and library, lunches at the park, arts and crafts, and more.
- The KidPreneur Program will be introduced as a project of The Council of Youth Leaders in 2014 to introduce kids to entrepreneurship. Participating children will actually participate in the planning, set-up and operation of a small business .... by kids and for kids! They'll become part of a kids' "think tank," learning how to create ideas and turn those ideas into business concepts. They'll also learn the basics of planning to start a real business, how to write a business plan, how money works, how to deliver good customer service, and how to manage employees. As the program progresses, our entrepreneurial students will actually help in the development of a real business that will not only help The Youth Source to become self-sustaining, but also create jobs for the youth themselves as they get old enough to work.
Projects: Outside our standard programs, we also provide opportunities for our youth to learn and benefit from participation in community service projects and public relations opportunities for The Youth Source. These projects teach leadership, communication and networking skills, and prepare youth to become good citizens and community ambassadors for the future.
These young men with their adult mentors (on the ends) have just finished a community service project cleaning up the area around Sunset Park School, and now await their ride home. They’ve learned the good feeling of doing something for someone, as well as understanding from a new perspective, the importance of respecting public property and not littering.
